Mini BreakOut West

by Andrea East, Host Committee

The BreakOut West host committee is organizing BreakOut West’s first ever family showcase.  On Sunday October 24, 2010 from 10:30 to 2:30, the Rotary Centre for the Arts in Kelowna is going to be buzzing with musical activity and little people.  Come on down to this FREE family event.

My inspiration for proposing this event is my daughter.  I was so excited to be volunteering for the host committee, but there weren’t going to be any events at the festival where families could bring their kids to enjoy the amazing talent that would be in our City.  Fortunately, the organizers loved the idea and we had the go ahead to plan Mini BreakOut West.  This is what we have planned so far:

Main Stage:  Live musical performances featuring children’s performers and other family friendly musicians.  The line up of performers are listed below!.

Wentworth Music Instrument Petting Zoo:  It is our goal that every kid who comes to Mini BreakOut West should have a chance to touch a really cool instrument.  This room will be dedicated to giving kids a chance to try their hand at rock and roll.  Parent supervision required.

Musical Craft:  So you have taken in the shows, and you have rocked out in the Instrument Petting Zoo.  This will be your kid’s chance to make an instrument to take home with them.

Mini BreakOut West:  The Performers!

THE KERPLUNKS:  Gabriola Island, BC.  Nominee for Children’s Recording of the Year.  Performing 10:30 to 11:30 am Oct 24 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.  The MULTI-AWARD-WINNING Kerpunks all started when Dinah D and Tina Jones began Melody Makers Musical Preschool on Gabriola Island. The popularity of this program grew, thus The Kerplunks were born! Now a four-piece band, they’ve been called Canada’s hippest new Children’s Entertainers! The Kerplunks play catchy tunes guaranteed to get kids engaged singing along and joining in on the actions.

GOGO BONKERS!:  Vancouver, BC.  Nominee for Children’s Recording of the Year. Performing 11:30 to 12:30 pm Oct 24 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.  GoGo Bonkers! Is the brainchild of two very talented and gifted musicians, Iain McLaren and Trevor Mason. This dynamic and creative musical duo performs interactive songs for children. Their highly imaginative songs and co-operative interplay with children makes a Bonkers! Concert an event to remember.

NORMAN FOOTE: Vancouver, BC.   Nominee for Children’s Recording of the Year. Performing 12:30 to 1:30 pm Oct 24 at the Rotary Centre for the Arts. Norman Mervyn Barrington-Foote is an internationally acclaimed musician, songwriter, and comedian for all ages. Originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he is best known for his songwriting, outrageous props, and off beat sense of humor in children’s music and live performance; he has been nominated for four Juno Awards for Best Children’s Album in 1990, 1993, 2001, and won in 2010. For years, musician and visual comic Norman Foote has delighted audiences worldwide. Norman has received critical acclaim for his clever songs and engaging concert performances.

GRAND ANALOG:  Winnipeg, MB. Nominee for Rap/Hip Hop Recording of the Year.  Grand Analog is a raw collective of seasoned record collectors, musicians and self described beat junkies. Leader Odario Williams describes the Grand Analog sound as a beautiful mess of rap’n'roll, dub and soul. Grand Analog is bringing their turn tables to perform especially for all of the kids and parents in Kelowna who love great Canadian Hip Hop (and can’t stay up so late to see them in the festival)!

See you there!

I was just curious to know how this event is making history this weekend? Isn’t this the weekend that Rockanogan would have been holding their event. Its held the same time every year and would have show cased local talent again for the 3rd year in a row. I had some friends who where even prebooked by the organizers directly after last years show as it was such a success. I was also confused a little when I heard in the news that this is a new event for this city for at least the last 3 years. How is this possible if this would have been Rockanogan’s 3rd year??? I just find it very coincidentally that the organizer of this weekend approached all the same venues that where involved with Rockanogan mere weeks before they where going to put on there annual event only to pull the rug right out from under them and take something that has taken 3 years to build and then claim it as his own creation.
