Mini BreakOut West – Wentworth Music Instrument Petting Zoo

Mini BreakOut West is so excited to announce that WENTWORTH MUSIC will be sponsoring the Instrument Petting Zoo!

Wentworth Music Kelowna
So what is an instrument petting zoo anyway?  It is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with some really cool instruments, including guitars, drums, keyboards and others.  The Wentworth Instrument Petting Zoo will have all this and more, plus music teachers from their school on hand to show the kids some basic moves for the different instruments.  We will even have an area for the littler kids to experiment with pre-school friendly instruments.

We are also pleased to announce the Wentworth Music Secondary Stage, where between sets from our main stage performers, students from Wentworth’s elite bands will perform.  What would a kids festival be without some kids making music!  There is incredible talent in our beautiful city, and this will be your chance to see some of Kelowna’s rising stars!

Local Artist Spotlight: Fields of Green

In the beginning, there was Fields of Green. Okay, that’s not completely true. In reality, this dynamic foursome from Kelowna, BC has only been around since 2008, but they’ve been breaking ground quickly ever since, trampling the expectations of slouching teenagers and erect professionals alike while shattering pre-existing notions of brilliance underfoot. Like a slightly less violent, highly localized Spanish Inquisition, Fields of Green will flay you to the bone with their genre-hopping post-rock getup, and then build you back with superb technical skill, weaving flesh and sinew together with haunting melody, gymnastic rhythms, flawless vocals, and seriously fresh style.

Did you apply to the BreakOut West festival in Kelowna?

We sure enough did!

What new oppurtunities do you think this may have for your band?

We’ll be able to meet new bands and people in the music industry who could perhaps “discover” us at the festival and move us further toward our goal of becoming a successful band.  Also it will just be a fun-filled time for all.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the Kelowna music scene in the last few years?

Well definitely there’s been lots of new indie bands entering the Kelowna scene.  In Previous years the Kelowna scene was made up mostly of “Hardcore” or “Screamo”, which tends to all sound the same so it’s really great to see lots of different and new sounds coming from bands.  It’s really exciting to be a part of.

Have you noticed if more venues are opening their doors for local Kelowna artists to play shows around town?

Yeah definitely.  Within the last 5 years there’s been venues opening their doors such as Mars Hill Cafe, Streaming Cafe, Grateful Fed, Minstrel Cafe, and more.  The more venues, the more music, the better everything is!

Local Artist Spotlight: Olga Osipova

A little bit about Olga…
After the launch of her all-original debut CD “Velvet & Lace” things started happening fast for Olga Osipova. Only a couple months after the Canadian release,  the CD already topped the smooth jazz charts in her native Russia, was added to rotation on many radio stations in Canada and across the world (USA, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand, France, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Poland etc.) Olga’s music is receiving rave reviews from the press including the prestigious JazzTimes Magazine; she won the Jazz Artist of the Year at the BC Interior Music Awards in 2008, and most recently, Olga was announced Finalist in the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards.

More about Olga.

Did you apply to the BreakOut West festival in Kelowna? – Sure I did!

What new opportunities do you think this may have for your band? -
Networking would be good of course, and getting to know the people in
the industry. It’s pretty exciting that BreakOut West is coming to
Kelowna, kind of like the industry is coming to your door. Usually
it’s the other way around for musicians from relatively small cities -
we have to go to big centres to network with the industry. BreakOut
West is an awesome opportunity for local artists.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the Kelowna music scene in the last few years?
Music BC has an office in Kelowna now – it is so important to have
that support of your Music Association right where you live. Okanagan
Music Awards expanded their reach and now include all of the BC
Interior, there are more artists, more venues… you see the city is
growing and the music scene is growing too.

Have you noticed if more venues are opening their doors for local Kelowna artists to play shows around town?
I noticed some new venues, yes… Although a nice jazz club is still
on my wish list. Hopefully we’ll have one soon, with all those other
good things happening!

Local Artist Spotlight: Cynthia Leigh-Ann

When it comes to precocious, British Columbia’s newest recording artist
Cynthia Leigh-Ann knows what she wants, and she’s been given all the God given talents and technical tools she needs to get the job done. Her spunky enthusiasm, big voice, and a spirit to match; this pretty blue-eyed 18-year-old Country-Pop Artist has been making a splash in British Columbia since 2007.

Since she was a little girl, Cynthia Leigh-Ann’s first love has always been music, She demonstrates a broad range of vocal influences, but centers herself on country music as her stylistic core, a genre she gravitates to with enormous ease, she has always dreamed of becoming a recording artist, by bringing her gift of music to her audiences, helps them to feel the passion and stories behind her songs.  Cynthia Leigh-Ann was heavily influenced by Terry Clarke, Shania Twain, Jessie Farrow, The Dixie Chicks, and The Higgins.

Did you apply to the BreakOut West festival in Kelowna?

Yes I applied to the  BreakOut West Festival in Kelowna because of the excellent opportunities available for me to express myself and my music and song.

What new opportunities do you think this may have for your band?

Having the opportunity to Perform in the BreakOut West Festival allows me to showcase my music, perform on the live stages to entertain my fans, the delegates and of course the abundance of visitors to will visit Kelowna. I will have the opportunity to be considered for the awards in the categories I qualify for.  BreakOut West is Western Canada’s is all of our chance to take the  opportunity to showcase our Talent and  let us  shine.

The conferences and seminars are going to be excellent, and will provide me with many of the tools I will need to improve my skills  and further my music career, we will also have a great opportunity  to meet and greet with Agents, labels, and collaborate with my colleagues and my fellow artists.                   I will also have the opportunity to hopefully market my CD and pick up some bookings.  I personally feel that the  BreakOut West Festival is one of the best events for the western provinces, and we the Artists.

What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the Kelowna music scene in the last few years?

1-      The City of Kelowna is making their Festivals better and  more accessible to all music and all ages, they also provide a paid venue and provide great entertainment for our public. Many artist gain recognition and often these opportunities have helped jump start their music careers, like mine. However, I would also like them to use more of our local Artists as their headliners for the shows, instead of out of town acts which costs more to bring them in. Note: I do feel, some out of townshould be included as it does bring in the crowds depending on who they are.

2-      Approving certain establishments like the Habitat and others like them to increase  their clubs hours and appropriate liquor licenses.

3-      Awarding Grants to allow events to showcase the local talent.

4-      Music Schools, Local personalities, and venues along with many of our local musicians making things happen. New Festivals being started giving artists more local opportunities to get involved, Music Camps are spring up, Out of town associations are coming to Kelowna to offer education, as well as the local people that are working with the Arts Community to offer their talent, knowledge and help to put The Art first in this town.

5-      The College and University offering a good Arts program here, and excellent music engineers and producers moving here to provide the best equipped studios, for music, CD, DVD and Post-prod.

6-      Having good facilities to bring the arts, shows, concerts and culture to our city.

Have you noticed if more venues are opening their doors for local Kelowna artists to play shows around town?

Yes,  Kelowna is growing in awareness becoming a much better place for the Artists to perform, and play shows around town. Many excellent venues are opening their doors  to include live entertainment and competitions. A number of  the eateries, restaurants, pubs, for those of legal age,  Golf courses and clubs like The Habitat, The Minstrel Café, Mary Irwin and the Community Theater  and others have great venues to not only introduce emerging recording artist like myself, but seasoned artist to showcase themselves at paid gigs. Music BC and the BCMA are providing educational venues and performance opportunities that involve our area. The Rotary Center for the arts and the entire Arts scene has grown and we have many festivals and private venues to get involved in. We can always improve but we are off to a good start.
